Kate Middleton's Red Coat Echoes Princess Diana's Style From 30 Years Ago
Like mother, like daughter-in-law. Kate Middleton gave longtime royal watchers a serious case of deja vu on Monday, April 7, when she stepped off the plane in New Zealand in an outfit that echoed one worn by her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, 30 years earlier.
The Duchess of Cambridge, 32, made her official royal tour debut in a perfectly tailored scarlet Catherine Walker coat, which she paired with a matching Gina Foster pillbox hat and black pumps. Catherine Walker was one of the Princess of Wales' favorite designers; according to the U.K.'s Telegraph, she created more than 1,000 outfits for Prince William's late mother.
The common threads don't end there, though. Middleton's chic ensemble was reminiscent of one a then-pregnant Princess Diana wore in March 1984, when she and Prince Charles visited Leicester, England.
Like her future daughter-in-law, the Princess of Wales accessorized with a red pillbox hat and black pumps. Her coat, however, had black buttons and a black velvet collar to match the black netting on her hat. The Duchess' has silver buttons, which coordinate with the silver, diamond, and platinum fern broach she borrowed from Queen Elizabeth II.
